5Nice treeJan 27, 2011

The Mexicola Grande is a very fast growing tree. Only problem is the shipping charge, but it is understandable that when shipping something in this category, the high fee is unavoidable. My tree is in its third year and it has tolerated cold quite well. My location is about 15 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and our winters can present us with a few harsh days. The rating on the Mexicola is for a low of 25°F. My observation is that such a rating is about 5° too low. So far this winter, temps of 20°F have occurred. To circumvent damage to the tree, last year I began lacing the tree with strings of 7 watt Christmas lights and covering the tree with a couple of cotton sheets tied to the tree using nylon string. This has worked extremely well, but the drawback is that the tree thinks it is in a hot house. As of this date, January 27, 2011, the tree has begun to form blossoms!! After three years, the tree is about 12 ft. high.

February 7, 2014: My additional comments: The skin of the fruit is very, very thin and difficult to peel. Also, the fruit is somewhat watery but acceptable.
Now, the finale: We finally got a severe winter storm in Pensacola, Florida and had temps down to 17°F. That destroyed the tree, it appears. Per what I have written before, the Mexicola Grande can take 25°F, but not the low temps, ice, sleet, snow that we had. I am really sick about losing this tree because I have nursed it along all of these years. In the past years, I put 1,500 watts of Christmas lights (8 watt bulbs) all over the tree and covered it with old cotton sheets. That worked great, but the tree thought it was in a hot house and blossomed early, which was great for me. Well, our winter was proceeding mildly and the tree had blossoms on it - until this winter storm came out of nowhere. I was in bed with the flu and could not go out in the cold to string the lights. So, all of the leaves and thinner branches are dead and maybe the whole tree is gone. I will not know possibly until April. I also may have lost my Navel Orange tree, Satsuma tree, Mandarine tree and some of my Bay Leaf trees (Mountain Laurel.) The fruit on my trees was covered with ice, which ruined them.

3Didn't LastDec 27, 2009

It was a couple of years ago actually when I bought this for my Mother for Mother's Day. It arrived in plenty of time considering I ordered too close to the day, I give it that. I can't really say if it was the seller's fault, the plant itself, my Mom, or our ground, but the poor thing didn't last for a couple months or so. There was just a lot of factors involved to not point fingers at. It arrived nicely with instructions and only a few leaves had fallen. Perhaps, I'll try again with a different plant, but the way the weather is going wacky on us, I don't think any time soon. I would suggest to give it a try and see if it works out for you.

Hass avocado goes well with Fuerte.
