This plant arrived in a box which had cardboard dividers and packing peanuts to stabilize the contents. The plant’s container was wrapped and tied in plastic to keep the soil and moisture where it belongs. It is a very healthy specimen (roughly 2 x 2 feet in volume) and already developing some good clusters of blueberries. The packaging is superb.

In the course of my research, I found that blueberries demand acidic soil with several sites giving instructions on how to use pH papers and prep the soil for a year, then plant new vines which will begin to produce in two more years. That requires a wee bit too much patience for a container specimen in my backyard, so I selected this well developed product rather than wait three years. The extra expense of a plant like this, amortizes out to around one dollar a month versus the other method.

I also purchased some bags of Azalea Soil which are already conditioned and ready to go for blueberry plants, just the way I like it. Blueberries grow well in containers and I selected this technique in order to keep the different soils separate and…. oh god, I can’t go on…. I’m using a container because I’m getting old and squatting down to pick the berries is a hassle. That’s not to say I don’t want to engage in hunter-gatherer activities, I just don’t want to work as hard. So the container holds the bush at a better height, while supplying an attractive visual in the yard.

Be sure to match your plant to the growing zone (9 for me) where you live, the plants won’t let you cheat and you will be punished with lower yields and constant worry. Using a container, Azalea soil, and this well established plant has made adding blueberries to the garden a relatively simple task.

Hass avocado goes well with Fuerte.
